The
Gorilla Glue project, design wise, offered up some interesting
challenges. We were not working with straight vector art, but
rather using jpegs to guide us, so the entire graphic had to
be redrawn in Illustrator. What made this even more challenging
was the level of detail in the original art. The Gorilla face
has real character and his coat of hair is highly shaded and
realistically drawn. The best way to evoke the powerful look
of this ape in polyvinyl was to lean toward a graphic comic
book style. The thousands of hairs shown on the print graphic
were replaced with larger patches of color suggesting the waves
in the gorilla's coat and heavy sections of shadowing represented
by the black areas. We purposely chose to show these areas down
on the mat as the backing depth to further give the illusion
of shading. We are very proud of the result. The graphic pops,
embodies the gorilla essence, and highlights the glimmer of
his eyes.
